After the September 11 attack in 2001 and the war in Afghanistan, the U.S. moved suspected captured terrorists to Guantánamo detention camp, Guantánamo Bay, Cuba. Prisoners were classified as "enemy combatants" to circumvent the Geneva Convention on Prisoners of War. Suspected terrorists have been held indefinitely without charge.

The military hospital in Landstuhl, Germany is the largest U.S. military hospital abroad. All wounded American military personal are transported from the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq for surgery and treatment. Many are flown to Walter Reed Military Hospital in Washington DC for further treatment.
